2014 IFMAR Pre Worlds

Team Awesomatix EU and Awesomatix USA both arrived to test ourselves at the 2014 IFMAR Pre Worlds Warm Up at Full Throttle Raceway in Kissimmee, Florida from April 4-6 2014.  In attendance was Freddy Sudhoff, Josh Cyrul, Michael Hanulec and Mark Burt.  Although the primary class getting everyone focus was the Modified TC class, there was also a 17.5 TC class to help bring in the locals.

By the end of the weekend our Awesomatix A700 Evo touring cars would be lapping as fast, or faster than the winners of the Modified A-main -- and win the 17.5 TC Class!

The large straightaway at Full Throttle Raceway brought its own set of challenges ranging cars too slow down the straight, to cars so fast they blew part the specified rubber race tire.  The racing line, driving onto the painted areas, also threw a lot of races for a loop -- especially if you run a Red/White body like some people we know (Hanulec).

After qualifying in Modified TC, Freddy found himself 12th overall after having issues in the 5th round of qualifying and a fastest time of 21/5:01.435 (round 4). Otherwise with a 6th in round 4 and 5th in round 6 he was on track to an A-main appearance.  Local team driver, Mark, qualified 28th overall with a best run of 15th in round 5 and a fastest time of 21/5:13.076. Josh qualified 33rd overall with a best run of 20th in round 6 and a fastest time of 20/5:00.733. Michael qualified 48th overall with a best run of 33rd in round 5 and fastest time of 20/5:12.765.

In the 17.5 TC class, Mark Burt would TQ the class, with Michael Hanulec qualifying 3rd and Shane Williams qualifying 8th.

Mains

Across the board - all of the Awesomatix runners performed their personal fastest runs within the mains.

Freddy's Mains

Freddy's first two mains went off without any issue.  He raced Hara (Yokomo) noise to tail until the tone.  If you analyze the times between the A-main and B-mains you'll see-

  • In B1, Hara and Freddy went faster than Volker (A1 winner)
  • In B2, Hara and Freddy had the 4th and 5th fastest runs of the round respectively
  • In B3, both Freddy and Hara wasn't as lucky, and hand to pull off before the end.
  • Freddy shaved a total of 5 seconds off his prior best run, and moved into the 22 lap club!

After losing a bunch of time chasing electrical gremlins, Mike had the greatest overall time improvement within his mains by shaving 10 seconds off his prior best run.  E3 would have yielded his best overall result but he broke out at the end of the race while in 3rd and racing with 1st and 2nd.   As you can see - Masami was very impressed!

17.5 TC Mains

After a rough A1, Awesomatix USA's Mark Burt took the win in A2 and A3.  The big straightaways and allowing the D3.5 motor definitely made its impact on the top results.  Michael Hanulec was the highest finisher not running a D3.5-based motor.

Kody Knudtson and Kyle Klingforth winners at 2014 ROAR On-Road Carpet Nationals

Team Awesomatix USA converged from points west and east to HobbyTown USA HobbyPlex in Omaha, Nebraska for the 2014 ROAR On-Road Carpet Nationals.  Team Awesomatix USA leaves the event with its first two National Championships - Kody Knudtson in Modified TC, and Kyle Klingforth in 17.5 TC.

Modified TC

Qualifying

Paul Lemieux (XRay) would TQ Modified TC but only by less than 0.5 seconds over Kody Knudtson's Awesomatix A700 Evo.  Filling out the top five would be Keven Hebert (Associated), Josh Cyrul (Awesomatix A700 Evo) and Andrew Doherty (XRay).  Jake Danilchik would make it three Awesomatix A700 Evo USA Spec cars all with the new C01AL 2mm Alloy Chassis making the A final.

  • 10)Christopher Hillier36/6:09.574 (R4)

A1

Paul Lemieux would run away with the win, allowing for a tight battle between Kody, Keven and Josh for 2nd. Paul would cruise to the win, with Kody and Keven following.

A2

Paul Lemieux again lead from the tone, with Kody, Keven and Josh in toe.  Kody would tap, allowing Keven to pass for 2nd.  Keven would then start to challenge Paul, and finally get by Paul on lap 14 -- and opening the door for both Kody and Josh to pass Paul.  Kody and Josh would exchange 2nd place a few times before Kody would retain the position.  Finishing order was Keven, Kody, Josh and Paul.  Kody and Josh would hold the fastest laps of A2, so everyone expected some excitement in A3.

A3

With two different winners in the prior mains, and Kody with two 2nd place finishes, three racers had the opportunity to win this exciting A3.  Paul Lemieux was again out in the lead with Kody, Keven and Josh in hot pursuit.  On lap 17 of the race Paul would tap in the chicane leading onto the straightaway allowing Kody to take the lead. Kody would only hold the lead for a lap before tapping out himself, but he could recover quickly. Kody continued to apply pressure on Paul until lap 25 when Paul would have his second board meeting with the chicane allowing Kody to rocket into the lead. Paul would fall back to to 3rd and work to case down Keven Hebert. Kody didn't back off the pressure as he would set the hot lap of the race on lap 35 and crossed the finish line with a 1.5 second lead of Keven.

Tie Breaker

After A3 there were three drivers taking wins, the deciding factor would then be points.  Kody and Keven both had 199 points, so the result would be determined by the best two runs time + laps.  Kody would take the win because of his faster win (A3) and faster 2nd place (A1).

17.5 TC

Qualifying

The 17.5 TC class had one of the closest girds with the top 6 drivers all recording 36 laps.  The father-son team of Brent and Kyle Klingforth would put the field on notice by qualifying 2nd and 1st.  The top 5 qualifiers actually had four Awesomatix touring cars -- with Bill Sydor qualifying 4th and Art Scrimo 5th.  Eric Anderson would qualify 3rd with his XRay.

  • 10)Jones Michael35/6:07.105 (R3)

A1

Kyle would lead form the tone, with Brent, Eric and Bill all following.  The top three would separate out over the course of the run, but finish in that order.  Art Scrimo would rally after a rough start and finish 4th overall.

A2

Kyle again would lead, with Brent and Eric in close pursuit.  Kyle would have an easy race after Brent and Eric had some taps up front.  The top 5 qualifiers would finish in that order and Kyle Klingforth would tie up his National title!

A3

With Kyle sitting out, Brent Klingforth would lead from the tone easing away from Eric over the course of the run.  Brent would go unchallenged to finish a fantastic 1-2 for both Awesomatix USA, and the Klingforth family.

A1

Drew would lead from the start, but a few laps into the race his car spun out in the sweeper allowing Kyle to get into the lead.  Drew would drive hard through the pack as Kyle would tap out of the lead on lap 25 allowing Drew to take over the lead.  The top 3 qualifiers would finish in that order.

A2

Drew had a cleaner start this time and never give up the lead.  Kyle and Eric would swap 2nd and 3rd because of taps throughout the run.  Finally near the end of the run Brent Klingforth would rally past Eric after a top to finish 3rd.  Drew Ellis took the 13.5 National Championship.

A3

With Drew sitting out of A3, Kyle would lead from the tone.  Kyle tapped on lap 3, and allowing Eric to get by only until returning the favor on lap 4.  Kyle would drive uncontested for the rest of the race, with Eric finishing 2nd, and Tim Copp in 3rd from a 6th starting spot.

Get ready for summer with Raceberry!

Awesomatix USA is bringing in the asphalt killing Raceberry chassis for the A700 Evo.  After consulting with Freddy Sudoff (Awesomatix EU) and Bernd Wellerdiek (Raceberry) we believe the Raceberry "hard" 2.1mm chassis in the Sudoff design that will be a hit this summer.

The first run of chassis are expected to be available after the 3rd round of the ETS series (mid-March) just in time for the start of the outdoor season kicking off with the Worlds Warmup the first week of April.  We are now taking back orders for these chassis.
